Does trying to optimize the application for multi-core processors really have to come with such penalties?sticking with 4.11 for now. I need to do some more complex testing scenarios to figure out just how wide of an impact the latest version (4.20) this new version will have on the types of files that i typically archive.btw - johnk119 has a good point in that on 64 bit systems, we do have tons of memory and a different type of memory management than on 32 bit systems, so that may help take the edge off of my concerns somewhat.for all my 32 bit systems, i'm still using windows xp.

All of my 64 bit systems are windows 7 and have at least 8 gig of ram. The ability properly address more than 4 gig of memory is the primary motivation for me to be using windows 7 right now. Windows 7 64 bit has much, much better driver support than windows xp 64 bit has ever had, at least from my personal experience.all this to say, maybe i'm worried too much in terms of the 64 bit version of winrar.

Windows 7 64bit does run programs that will run on windows 7 32bit, BUT not ALL 32bit programs will run on Windows 7!!! There are many programs that will run on Windows XP and before that will not run on Windows 7. IF you had Windows 7 Pro version (or upgrade) there is a program you can download from Microsoft that will simulate an XP environment to allow programs to run that otherwise will not. I BELIEVE that this will not include ALL programs as windows 7 security settings will not probably allow some memory control for the programs that XP allowed. I would suggest that you first look into a newer version of the program you want to run.

This feature was made due to the fact that some business programs (especially custom and customized ones) cost businesses thousands of dollars and would not be able to transition over to windows 7 for years otherwise. You have to consider that a newer version of your program might not be that much more expensive than upgrading to pro, and with the newer version, usually comes newer features. I can purchase other programs that do just as much but I would loose my data base of almost 9,000 entries. Presently I am still using my XP Pro on my old computer just for this program. I will try the Ms site to see if that program will work on my version of 7. It would take me months to copy each file, so it would be worth a lot to me to get it working in this puter. Also look into if your program has an EXPORT feature. Some databases do, but they may be limited in formats available. It may allow a data export to say Excel or a standard database format and many new programs might have a similar import feature. Look into what format your program saves it's data and compare that to other programs. Also ASK potential software vendors if the can import directly from the program you will be migrating from, they may be very helpful BEFORE you actually purchase AND they may have a 30day trial period so you can actually try it before you buy it.
